How Dirty is Your Smartphone?

Do you know how dirty your smartphone is?  Our phones are something that we handle pretty much every hour of every day. Whether we are making calls, sending messages or browsing social media, they are very rarely out of sight. Furthermore, we place them in pockets, put them in bags, leave them on tables and some even choose to use them while they are in the toilet but one thing we very rarely consider is the number of germs that they collect.

Your Phone is a Breeding Ground for Germs

The truth is that your phone is a breeding ground for germs and although you might think that it is clean, we can guarantee that it isn’t. At the moment, the covid-19 pandemic has already taught us a lot about the spreading of germs and also, the importance of hygiene. However, it has been found that our phones are actually ten times dirtier than a toilet seat while they can also harbour around 17,000 bacterial gene copies. So, what this proves is that the most commonly used item that we carry with us is actually one of the worst places for spreading germs.

We handle them, place them up to our faces and we never clean them in the same way as we would our hands. Our phones are also exposed to everything we touch, so what is found on your hands is also found on your phone and that is quite alarming. So, we spend time washing our hands, should we be cleaning our phones too?

What Makes Phones so Unhygienic?

The majority of us will remember to wash our hands several times a day and even at the moment, we are using antibacterial hand gel. However, your phone is the perfect environment for germs to thrive. It’s a warm device because of how often we use it and the warmer it is, the more likely it is for bacteria to grow and this increases your risk of being infected. What’s more, we may also share our phones with other people and that enables us to increase the potential for spreading disease.

How to Clean Your SmartPhone

There are several things that you can do to keep your phone clean. The first is to use a UV light smartphone sterilizer as this will remove up to 99.99% of bacteria. This is the most effective way of cleaning smartphones, tablets and small items as it leaves no place for germs to hide. You can also use a gadget like this to clean other germ collectors like house keys, car keys, credit cards and coins.

As an alternative, you could use antibacterial wipes to give the phone a wipe down several times a day but make sure you get into all the small indents and crevices.  Wipe the phone down gently to ensure you don’t saturate the phone.  Leave the phone for a few minutes to make sure it’s dry before you touch it as otherwise, you will only contribute to the issue.

Finally, you can also make sure that you continue to keep your hands and face as clean as possible.

So, when was the last time you cleaned your phone?
